JSW Steel Commences Low-Carbon Steel Project in Andhra Pradesh

JSW Steel Ltd has initiated the construction of a new steel facility in Andhra Pradesh, unveiling a Rs.16,350-crore investment that the firm claims will enhance local steel production capacity while furthering its transition to lower-carbon manufacturing.
“India is entering a significant phase of manufacturing and infrastructure expansion, and Andhra Pradesh is at the forefront of this growth. Steel will remain a critical enabler of this growth,” Jayant Acharya, joint managing director and chief executive of JSW Steel says.
The initiative in the Rayalaseema area will be constructed in two stages.

The initial project will set up a one million tonne per annum (mtpa) integrated steel facility at an expense of Rs.4,500 crore.
India's largest steelmaker announced that a second phase, with an investment of up to Rs.11,850 crore, will increase capacity to 2 mtpa, bringing the total investment to Rs.16,350 crore.
The investment arrives as JSW Steel speeds up capacity growth to satisfy India's increasing manufacturing and infrastructure needs. In May, the firm announced intentions to increase steelmaking capacity to approximately 80 mtpa by 2031 through brownfield expansion and partnerships, an initiative designed to position India's largest steel producer among the top global manufacturers.

“The commencement of the Rayalaseema Steel Project reflects JSW's confidence in Andhra Pradesh's long-term industrial and economic potential,” Sajjan Jindal, chairman and managing director, JSW Group, says. He added that the company aims to support the state's manufacturing-led growth while building globally competitive industrial capabilities.
The Rayalaseema facility will implement electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, utilizing recycled steel scrap and premium direct reduced iron (DRI) in place of the conventional blast furnace method.
The company states that the facility is intended to enhance energy efficiency, boost renewable energy utilization, and reduce carbon emissions.
The announcement of the Rayalaseema project arrives just over three months after Tata Steel inaugurated its initial electric arc furnace in Ludhiana, Punjab. The plant, with a capacity of 0.75 mtpa, was constructed at a cost of around Rs.3,200 crore.
The commencement event was graced by Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, prominent state government officials, and Jindal.

JSW stated that the initiative is anticipated to gain from the scheduled road, rail, power, and water infrastructure, aiding logistics and industrial growth in the area. The firm also anticipates that the investment will stimulate related industries and logistics operations, bolstering Andhra Pradesh's manufacturing foundation while aiding India's steel needs through a lower-carbon production method.
