Meta Platforms and state attorneys general have talked about a possible mid-trial settlement in a lawsuit alleging that the company intentionally created Facebook and Instagram to be addictive for young users, according to reports.

The report is released amid a federal court trial in California concerning claims initiated by 29 states, representing one of the most significant examinations of accusations that social media companies have adversely affected young users. Only days prior to the start of jury selection on August 12, a federal appeals court refused to stop the trial.

Meta and the attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey did not promptly reply to inquiries for comments beyond normal business hours.

Multiple state attorneys general issued advisories to the media about upcoming press conferences, including Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, whose office stated it intended to reveal "a significant consumer protection settlement with a top technology firm."

The lawsuits are part of a larger trend of legal action initiated by states, local governments, school districts, and individuals claiming that Meta and other social media platforms contributed to a nationwide mental health crisis among youth.

Meta has refuted the claims, asserting that it has made significant efforts to safeguard children on its platforms. The firm claimed it couldn't have deceived customers about the addictive nature of its services since "social media addiction" isn't an established psychiatric disorder.
