Nvidia announced that it has donated a supercomputer featuring its latest chips to a nonprofit associated with the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS).

The NPS, run by the US Navy, provides master’s and doctoral programs in areas like computer science and aerospace engineering, focusing on their uses in military operations.

Nvidia provided a system utilizing its GB300 Grace Blackwell servers, its top AI computers, to the NPS Foundation, a nonprofit affiliated with the school.

Nvidia and the NPS did not reveal the system's size but confirmed its installation at the NPS campus in Monterey, California, where Adm. Samuel J. Paparo, commander of US Pacific Command, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang intended to host an event to announce the system.

Although Nvidia's Blackwell chips are intended for US government supercomputers developed by the US Department of Energy, the donation made on Wednesday marks the military's first direct application of Nvidia's most advanced servers.

"Artificial intelligence will serve as a fundamental component of the defense system in America," Huang remarked in a statement.

The US and China are competing to implement AI for military applications, including creating targeting lists and drone combat.

"While updating our technology, we also need to update the way we educate our leaders," states Adm. Paparo. "Having access to advanced computing power allows NPS students and faculty to grasp the opportunities and responsibilities associated with these technologies."

"At first, we must meticulously oversee demand as we activate this function," stated Trenton Hancock, chief information officer at NPS. "However, what this system truly provides is the capability to investigate more intricate, real-world issues, particularly those that reflect the difficulties our operational fleet encounters daily."
