Power Grid Corporation Acquires MEL Power Transmission

imgState-owned Power Grid Corporation of India announced the acquisition of MEL Power Transmission, a special purpose vehicle (SPV), from PFC Consulting, entailing an investment of Rs 558 crore.  PFC Consulting is a division of the government-owned Power Finance Corporation.

The SPV will create a transmission system to evacuate power from Mahan Energen's generation facility in Madhya Pradesh on a BOOT (build own operate transfer) model, as indicated by reports.

The initiative involves setting up a 400 kV D/c transmission line along with related bays at the current Rewa PS (PG) substation in Madhya Pradesh, aimed at ensuring dependable power evacuation for the Mahan Energen Ltd (2x600 MW) Generation Station in Madhya Pradesh.

As of May 31, 2025, POWERGRID has successfully commissioned and is managing 283 substations along with 180,239 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 564,961 MVA of transformation capacity.

Through the implementation of cutting-edge technological tools and methods, increased utilization of automation and digital solutions, POWERGRID has consistently achieved transmission system availability exceeding 99.85 percent, it noted.

POWERGRID primarily focuses on the transmission of electricity through its EHVAC/HVDC transmission infrastructure.

The firm has expanded into the telecom sector by utilizing its nationwide transmission network through the installation of optical ground wire (OPGW). POWERGRID has offered consultancy services to both domestic and international clients by capitalizing on its expertise and experience in power transmission, sub transmission, distribution management, load dispatch, and communication, among others.
