Rishi Sunak, the former Prime Minister of the UK, has taken on advisory positions with Microsoft and AI company Anthropic, representing his re-entry into the tech industry during a period of significant AI-driven economic transformation worldwide.

While continuing his role as a Member of Parliament, Sunak, who is married to the daughter of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and writer Sudha Murty, will serve in these advisory capacities on a part-time basis.

Documentation from the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACOBA) indicates he will offer "high-level strategic perspectives" regarding global economic and geopolitical developments and their relationship with technological advancement and societal impact.

The ACOBA-sanctioned arrangement prohibits Sunak from providing counsel on British government policies or engaging in ministerial lobbying. Both organizations have agreed to maintain proper boundaries around his responsibilities, limiting them to strategic, macroeconomic, and geopolitical issues separate from his prime ministerial experience, while implementing measures to prevent potential conflicts of interest.

“I have long believed that technology will transform our world and play a key part in determining our future,” Sunak said in a LinkedIn post announcing his appointments. “I am excited to help these two companies as they address the big strategic questions about how to make tech work for our economies, our security, and our society.”

He praised Microsoft for its decades-long role in driving productivity and described Anthropic as “one of the most exciting AI frontier labs.”

“We stand on the edge of a technological revolution whose impacts will be as profound as those of the industrial revolution — and felt more quickly,” Sunak added.

“In my role as a senior adviser, I want to help ensure this shift delivers improvements in all of our lives.”

Anthropic says Sunak was “among the first global leaders to recognise AI’s transformative potential,” citing his creation of the world’s first AI Safety Institute and the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in 2023. The company added that Sunak’s advisory role “fully complies with ACOBA conditions” and will focus on providing internal strategic insights.

Sunak has committed to contributing his entire compensation from the Microsoft and Anthropic positions to The Richmond Project, a charitable organization he established with his spouse Akshata Murty focused on enhancing mathematical literacy across different age demographics.

The ex-prime minister additionally holds a senior advisory role with Goldman Sachs, which he began in July 2025, marking his initial significant career move after stepping down as Conservative Party leader following Labour's decisive electoral success in 2024.

Throughout his time as prime minister from October 2022 to July 2024, artificial intelligence represented a key policy priority. His administration collaborated with Microsoft and Anthropic to organize the AI Safety Summit, where Microsoft committed £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) toward expanding AI infrastructure and training programs in Britain.
