Trump Administration to Increase Government's Tech Worker Ranks

The Trump administration initiated a recruitment campaign to strengthen the government’s workforce of tech professionals by launching a program that will employ tech staff to support federal agencies on initiatives involving artificial intelligence and modernization.
The initiative, named the U.S. Tech Force, represents the administration's inaugural focused recruitment effort of this nature, which began its term by terminating federal employees and urging countless others to step down.
The government has consistently required more tech workers, but that shortfall likely increased this year, when an unspecified number left.
"We possess certain resources, but it's definitely a field that requires further development," stated Scott Kupor, the head of the Office of Personnel Management, which is overseeing the initiative.

The objective is to recruit approximately 1,000 high-quality technical personnel and managers to collaborate on initiatives at organizations like the IRS and the Defense Department. The government is looking for software engineers, data scientists, and product managers.
Kupor stated that after two years, they have the option to remain in government or accept a higher-paying position in the private sector.

The Tech Force mirrors other initiatives by the federal government aimed at attracting more technologists. The U.S. Digital Corps, launched in 2021 during the Biden administration, aims to recruit tech professionals into federal positions for two-year periods, focusing on individuals at the start of their careers. The program aimed to enable participants to assist the government in updating its technology before eventually transitioning to higher-paying positions in the tech sector.
Another initiative was the U.S. Digital Service, established in 2014, which the Trump administration transformed into a hub for the Department of Government Efficiency and rebranded as the U.S. DOGE Service.
The initiative, led by Elon Musk, aimed to recruit tech professionals into governmental roles for swift modernization. However, DOGE also implemented significant layoffs, affecting senior technologists in the Digital Service and others within the General Services Administration's Digital Corps division.

DOGE has also dissolved 18F, a digital services agency founded in 2014 that produced software and technology solutions for multiple federal agencies and had around 100 employees.
