US President Donald Trump has declined a suggestion from Russian President Vladimir Putin to willingly keep abiding by limits on strategic nuclear arms after the landmark new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty expires.

The development occurred as Thursday signified the conclusion of the agreement, which had established the last remaining limitations on the nuclear weapons of the United States and Russia, the two countries with the largest stockpiles globally, resulting in, for the first time in more than fifty years, no legally enforceable restrictions remaining.

On his social media platform, Trump condemned the agreement, describing it as "a poorly negotiated deal by the United States" that was "being egregiously violated." He stated, "Instead of prolonging 'NEW START' -- a poorly negotiated agreement by the United States that, among other issues, is being severely violated -- we ought to have our Nuclear Experts develop a new, enhanced, and modern Treaty that can endure well into the future."

Situating his choice within a larger effort to bolster American military strength, Trump emphasized what he termed extensive defense enhancements throughout his presidency.

He claimed, "The United States is the strongest nation globally," and added, "I entirely revamped its military during my initial term, featuring new and numerous updated nuclear arms." He also acknowledged the creation of the Space Force and highlighted what he referred to as unparalleled growth across military branches.

In line with that theme, Trump mentioned advancements in naval capabilities, asserting that the new battleships are "100 times more powerful than those that navigated the oceans in World War II," specifically naming ships like the Iowa and the Missouri.

He proceeded to assert personal responsibility for halting global nuclear conflicts, declaring without further detail, "I have averted nuclear wars from erupting worldwide between Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, and Russia and Ukraine."
