Trump Pressures Latin American Leaders to Cut Ties with China

The US placed travel restrictions on three Chilean officials due to the potential establishment of a submarine fiber optic cable with China, while cautioning Peru against relinquishing control over a Chinese-constructed mega port.

Amid pressure from President Donald Trump, who warned of reclaiming US control over the Panama Canal, the Panamanian government took over two ports located at both ends of the canal that were operated by a Hong Kong firm.

When the US arrested Venezuela's former President Nicolas Maduro in January, China recognized that its significant interests in the oil-rich nation were abruptly at risk.

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has implemented strong measures in various Latin American countries to reduce China's influence and economic power. In an effort to regain US dominance in the Western Hemisphere, the president is welcoming Latin American leaders to his golf resort close to Miami this weekend for a summit called the Shield of Americas.

Advocates for the White House shift believe it is essential to counter what they perceive as China's harmful impact on the US borders, cautioning that it could shift the global balance towards Beijing. Some doubt the efficacy of this straightforward method considering China's extensive and profound interests in Latin America.

Francisco Urdinez, an associate professor at the Political Science Institute of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, expressed concern that Latin American nations will need to choose a side.

Trump's strategy is complicating the process of hedging. The most probable result is a more divided region. Governments with right-leaning ideologies will connect more with Washington, whereas those with left-leaning ideologies will preserve or strengthen relations with China. Nations caught in the center will attempt to handle the pressure on a case-by-case basis.

In 2001, Cuba was the sole nation in the area conducting more trade with China than with the United States, as detailed by Urdinez in his 2026 book Economic Displacement: China and the End of US Primacy in Latin America, which monitored the activities of Chinese firms and investments.
