Uber and Nvidia Aim to Launch Robotaxi Services across 28 Cities

Uber Technologies and Nvidia announced on Monday that they will launch a fleet of robotaxis using Nvidia's autonomous driving software on the ride-hailing platform, beginning in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2027 and expanding to 28 cities worldwide by 2028.
Robotaxis are quickly spreading into additional cities as firms strive to launch autonomous ride-hailing, but Alphabet's Waymo continues to be the frontrunner, whereas Tesla's extensive production capabilities and financial assets may alter the competitive environment.
Rivalry in the industry has grown stronger as firms expand autonomous vehicle fleets. Alphabet's Waymo is operating the leading commercial robotaxi service, providing completely driverless rides in cities like Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, while gradually increasing its fleet.
Tesla, on the other hand, is investing in a camera-centric method for autonomy and has announced plans to introduce its own robotaxi service while utilizing its extensive vehicle production capability.
Uber and Nvidia announced that the cars will operate on the DRIVE Hyperion autonomous vehicle platform, paired with Alpamayo, an AI model focused on reasoning to navigate complex driving situations.

The process will start with data-gathering vehicles to educate the system on driving conditions specific to the city, followed by launches overseen by operators, and ultimately advancing to entirely driverless Level 4 operations.

The firms intend to broaden the service throughout North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia as part of a larger effort to introduce autonomous ride-hailing to consumers.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi stated that the collaboration aims to promote a "multi-player" autonomous vehicle environment on the platform as additional developers and car manufacturers introduce robotaxi services.
