The US has approved several billion dollars’ worth of Nvidia Corp. chip exports to the United Arab Emirates, an initial step in implementing a controversial deal that could serve as a blueprint for American AI statecraft.

According to reports,  the Bureau of Industry and Security from the Commerce Department recently granted Nvidia export licenses based on a bilateral AI agreement finalized in May.

The approval followed the UAE's establishment of definitive plans for a corresponding level of investment in the United States, according to a US official. The official refused to disclose the precise value of the sanctioned chip shipments and Emirati investment.

“The Commerce Department is completely dedicated to the groundbreaking AI partnership agreement between the U.S. and UAE,” reports indicate.

The licenses represent the initial approvals for Nvidia AI chip sales to the Gulf country since President Donald Trump assumed office.

They represent a concrete indication of advancement on a deal revealed almost five months prior, focusing on a large five-gigawatt data center in the capital of the Gulf nation, which includes OpenAI as a major tenant.

That agreement has caused considerable concern in Washington, where certain officials in the Trump administration and on Capitol Hill have doubted the prudence of constructing such an extensive site outside the US, particularly in an area where Beijing has established strong business and economic connections.

AI is driving transformation across all sectors. AI is offering businesses the computing power, tools, and algorithms essential for their teams to accomplish their significant tasks, ranging from generative AI and speech recognition to medical imaging and enhanced supply chain management.
