US Calls Taiwan 'Vital Partner'

High-ranking officials from Taiwan and the US talked about collaboration in artificial intelligence, technology, and drones at a major forum that started during the initial Trump administration, with the US State Department recognizing Taipei as an "essential partner."
Despite the absence of formal diplomatic relations, the US remains Taiwan's key international supporter and supplier of military equipment. The Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue between the U.S. and Taiwan was initially held in November 2020.
The State Department indicated that the sixth round of discussions occurred, headed by Under Secretary for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg and Taiwan's Economy Minister Kung Ming-hsin, who is currently in the US.
The two parties endorsed documents regarding the Pax Silica Declaration, a US-driven effort to ensure AI and semiconductor supply chains, as well as US-Taiwan collaboration on economic security, according to the State Department.
"Taiwan serves as an essential ally in these and other significant economic efforts, with its advanced manufacturing industry crucial in driving the AI revolution," it stated.

The discussions included conversations regarding supply chain security, covering its connection to AI, certification of drone parts, and collaboration on essential minerals, according to the State Department.
"Discussions aimed at emphasizing advancements in tackling economic coercion, fostering mutual collaboration in third countries, and resolving tax-related obstacles to boost investment between the United States and Taiwan," it stated.

Taiwan, a leading manufacturer of cutting-edge semiconductors essential for AI, has consistently advocated for a pact to prevent double taxation, claiming it would enhance mutual investment.
Taiwan's economic ministry reported that both parties concurred that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is "essential for global economic security and prosperity."

Taiwan and the US talked about undersea cable protection, collaboration on low-Earth-orbit satellites, and the development of advanced technology professionals.
Taiwan has charged China with damaging undersea telecommunications and internet cables, a claim that Beijing refutes, while it is increasing the deployment of low-Earth-orbit satellites for backup communications in case China cuts the cables during an assault on the island.
