Vivek Chaturvedi Appointed as New CBIC Chairman

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has granted approval for the designation of Vivek Chaturvedi as the Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). Chaturvedi, a distinguished officer of the 1990-batch of the Indian Revenue Service specializing in Customs and Indirect Taxes, will be assuming the role previously held by Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, a senior officer of the 1988-batch, who retired on November 28, 2025.
Chaturvedi is presently fulfilling the role of a Member at the CBIC, overseeing the Tax Policy and Legal divisions.

He assumed this position earlier in the year following the retirement of Vivek Ranjan on August 31, 2025. With over three decades of professional experience, Chaturvedi has held various significant positions within the realm of indirect tax management.
Prior to his appointment as a CBIC Member, he served as the Principal Director General of Vigilance and as the Chief Vigilance Officer, responsible for supervising transparency and internal governance mechanisms within the organization.
He has previously served as the head of the Directorate General of Analytics and Risk Management (DGARM).
In this role, he oversaw various data analytics projects focused on reducing tax evasion and enhancing evidence-based tax management.

The CBIC is the primary organization in charge of overseeing indirect taxes like GST, customs duties, and central excise in the country. Operating under the Ministry of Finance, the CBIC plays a vital role in revenue collection, compliance enforcement, and promoting trade efficiency.
Chaturvedi's significant background in oversight, adherence to regulations, and tax governance is anticipated to bolster the CBIC's continuous improvement initiatives and organizational effectiveness as he assumes leadership as its new head.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) is an established entity within the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance. Its mandate includes formulating strategies and overseeing the nation's indirect taxes, encompassing customs tariffs, central excise duty, and GST.

The primary responsibilities of the CBIC involve the collection of taxes, enforcement against smuggling activities, and oversight of administrative operations for its subordinate agencies. Formerly known as the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), the name of this organization was altered in 2018 following the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
