Volkswagen AG is in in-depth talks with JSW Group regarding a possible investment in its Indian operations, a step that could introduce a long-anticipated local partner into the German carmaker's activities in one of the globe's fastest-expanding automotive markets.

JSW Group and Volkswagen are in discussions for a potential deal in the upcoming weeks, where the Sajjan Jindal-led group would invest in the privately held Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd.

Top executives from Volkswagen and JSW have recently met, yet various sticking points persist, such as the deal's valuation and the amount of capital JSW and Volkswagen will contribute.

If completed, the transaction will conclude Volkswagen's lengthy search for a local partner in India. The German company has faced challenges in achieving growth in India, despite being present in the market for over twenty years. For the steel-to-electric vehicles group JSW, an agreement would grant access to Volkswagen’s vehicle platforms and a launchpad for additional possible collaboration worldwide with a prominent European automaker.

According to reports, Volkswagen is continually assessing new business prospects and different business alternatives to execute its strategy in India. India plays a significant role in Skoda Auto's worldwide expansion strategies, while refraining from discussing any talks with JSW.

Earlier this year, the Volkswagen group, which includes Skoda, VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini brands, holds approximately 2.5 percent of India's passenger vehicle market, falling short of a five percent market share target set for the end of the decade. The limited market share persists even though the Skoda brand has introduced models tailored for India, such as the Kylaq compact SUV.

JSW and Volkswagen started discussions three years back, with previous conversations concentrating on JSW utilizing Volkswagen India’s factories in Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra. The latest discussions between the two firms still face numerous obstacles and might ultimately fall through.

Volkswagen has grown more open to relinquishing control of its India division as it struggles with a challenging global turnaround, according to reports. Despite the Indian unit reporting an increase in profit for the year ending March 31, they indicated that the European parent is becoming cautious about financing the business without a local partner to help share the burden.

The attempt to curb spending in India reflects the challenges occurring throughout Volkswagen’s international operations, as the company aims to intensify an extensive cost-reduction initiative.

JSW has a partnership with China’s SAIC Motor Corp., which markets MG-branded vehicles in India, and intends to launch JSW-branded cars in the domestic market. Volkswagen had engaged in discussions for a collaboration with Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., but a local media report from early last year indicated that those negotiations broke down due to disagreements concerning development expenses and cultural differences.

The German car manufacturer has attempted multiple times to establish a sustainable operation in India, yet, similar to other European car companies, it has faced challenges in the price-sensitive market where local competitors like Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., Hyundai Motor India Ltd., Mahindra, and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. lead with their budget-friendly models.
