Air India Studies eVTOL Aircraft for Emergency Medical Logistics

Air India has ventured into the rapidly growing advanced air mobility sector, formalizing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japanese eVTOL aircraft developer SkyDrive Inc. and Suzuki Motor Corporation to explore the viability of using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for medical air logistics in India.
The collaborative research will analyze the potential of eVTOL aircraft to deliver urgent medical supplies throughout India’s congested urban areas, where traffic jams frequently hinder timely emergency shipments.
The partners will assess the operational, infrastructure, and regulatory needs for creating a secure and scalable eVTOL ecosystem for medical logistics.

The action marks Air India’s initial significant move toward investigating advanced air mobility (AAM) and eVTOL aircraft, positioning medical logistics as a leading practical use case within India's future aviation framework.
As India’s aviation sector grows quickly amid increasing urban traffic, the three firms think electric air taxis could greatly shorten transportation time for essential medicines, blood, organs, and other valuable medical cargo, where each minute counts.
Air India will lend its knowledge in cargo operations, airport infrastructure, and stakeholder collaboration, while SkyDrive will supply its eVTOL technology and Suzuki will offer its extensive insight into the Indian market and mobility landscape.

Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo at Air India, stated that advanced air mobility represents a natural evolution for India’s transportation system as the nation grows into one of the fastest-developing aviation markets globally.
He stated that the partnership demonstrated the shared goal of the collaborators to create advanced mobility solutions for practical challenges. Mamidala noted that employing eVTOL aircraft for medical logistics was significant as it merged advanced technology with a clear societal benefit by aiding in the reduction of essential transit durations.
Mamidala added that Air India would assist the feasibility study by utilizing its operational expertise, airport infrastructure insights, and industry connections to establish a secure, dependable, and scalable framework for eVTOL operations.

Tomohiro Fukuzawa, the Founder and CEO of SkyDrive, stated that the collaboration represents a significant advancement in introducing aerial mobility to an industry where quick response can potentially save lives.
Fukuzawa mentioned that eVTOL aircraft could revolutionize medical logistics in India's crowded cities by facilitating quicker transportation of critical and valuable medical supplies.
Masao Fujitani, Executive General Manager for Next Generation Business Development at Suzuki Motor Corporation, stated that the eVTOL aircraft under development by SkyDrive embodies a new era of mobility consistent with Suzuki’s vision of crafting more compact, lighter, and efficient transportation options. Fujitani stated that the firm intended to enhance urban medical infrastructure by collaborating with Air India and SkyDrive to create mobility solutions closely linked to individuals’ everyday lives.
