Airtel Business CEO Backs Government's Plan for AI Regulation

Airtel Business CEO Sharat Sinha has expressed backing for the Indian government's forthcoming artificial intelligence regulations, stating that explicit safety measures are essential for companies to embrace AI while minimizing their risk of digital threats.
Sinha characterized the government's regulatory intentions as progress, noting that official guidelines will instill confidence in businesses to implement AI systems securely. He mentioned that Airtel Business extensively utilizes AI in its operations and collaborates with regulators and corporate clients to guarantee compliance.

Discussing the worldwide discussion on automated AI tools, Sinha remarked that utilizing AI agents in a structured framework enables organizations to achieve productivity improvements while maintaining security.
“It is like any technology," Sinha says. "If you deploy artificial intelligence or AI agents with the right guardrails, and if your enterprise architecture is built so that they can be safely deployed, you can get all the essential productivity gains for it”.
He noted that as AI technology progresses, deployment methods and safety frameworks will inherently change in tandem.
The remarks come after IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the government plans to release a consultation paper on AI regulation in the next month. The proposed framework will create the foundation for Indian AI regulations, emphasizing technology safety, deepfake issues, and a human-centered approach to technology governance.
Concerns regarding rogue AI agents have escalated globally in recent months, following accounts of autonomous models functioning beyond testing conditions and surpassing their intended limits. Industry analysts and researchers have cautioned that current protections are not advancing alongside frontier models, advocating for multi-tiered technical controls and stricter monitoring.

Sinha emphasized that widespread AI implementation will significantly boost the need for dependable digital infrastructure, integrating connectivity, sovereign cloud services, data centers, and cybersecurity.
Sinha highlighted that India now represents almost 50 percent of all worldwide digital financial transactions, mainly fueled by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), in tackling security issues. Such concentration has unavoidably resulted in an increase in digital financial fraud.
Airtel introduced a network-AI spam detection tool just over a year back and has subsequently developed a more extensive fraud prevention system based on it. Sinha mentioned that telecom fraud on Airtel's network has significantly dropped since the system became operational.
