The acquisition was made without revealing the specific financial terms, showcasing Canva's goal of integrating machine learning further into the creative process. This is especially important as both brands and creators now require tangible results from digital content.

The establishment of a Chief Algorithms Officer position indicates that Canva is structuring its AI leadership at the highest organizational level, highlighting algorithms and data science as a central strategic component rather than a supplementary capability. Cliff Obrecht, one of the co-founders and the chief operating officer of Canva, expressed that the company's recent acquisitions align with their overarching goal of making sophisticated creative tools more attainable, all while emphasizing the importance of human ingenuity.

He stated, “Our objective is to liberate designers from cumbersome and costly software, consolidating a range of design capabilities, from vector to motion design, into a unified and potent suite”.

Canva has recorded 265 million active users, including 31 million paid subscribers, and an annualized revenue of $4 billion, demonstrating a growth of 36 percent year over year.

Previously, Canva experienced an increase in its expansion through the procurement of UK-based 2D animation platform Cavalry and US-based AI startup MangoAI. These acquisitions brought additional functionalities to its AI-driven creative ecosystem.

Canva's recent acquisition of Affinity in 2024 marked a significant milestone, with over four million downloads achieved since its debut.

The addition of Affinity to Canva's portfolio aligns with the company's broader expansion strategy, which includes a total of seven acquisitions based in Europe, comprising of Flourish, Kaleido, Smartmockups, Pexels, and Pixabay, thereby fortifying its presence on a global scale.

MangoAI, a fledgling company specializing in enhancing video advertising, is set to combine its unique algorithms and reinforcement learning technology with Canva AI. This strategic decision is anticipated to empower brands in generating customized promotional materials instantly, thereby enhancing campaign effectiveness and streamlining production processes.

Vinith Misra, co-founder of MangoAI, will transition to Canva as the Reinforcement Learning Lead within the organization's Research Lab.
