Chevron and Microsoft Join Forces to Power Texas AI Data Hub

Oil major Chevron has signed an agreement with Microsoft to power a data center in Texas through a 20-year power purchase contract.
The two firms will work together to construct a shared power facility, called Kilby, which will supply electricity to the data center under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
The site will supply 2.67 gigawatts of power capacity to the Microsoft data center utilizing gas turbines from GE Vernova, with extra capacity supplied by Solar Turbines, a fully owned division of Caterpillar. The new facility will assist in reducing the effects on the regional grid that consumers rely on.
Chevron stated that Project Kilby is anticipated to produce tax income exceeding USD10 billion for Texas and assist nearly 2,000 jobs.
"AI is transforming the world economy, and ample, cost-effective, dependable energy is crucial for driving that change," stated Jeff Gustavson, president of New Energies at Chevron.
Gustavson stated that the energy giant is capable of providing power to consumers at a competitive price, utilizing its Permian natural gas facility.

"This initiative connects Chevron's established strengths to new demand, generating unique value for our shareholders and the communities in which we function," Gustavson further remarked.
The arrangement highlights the necessity for a substantial quantity of energy needed to operate data centres. Hyperscalers such as Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft are competing to create extensive computing infrastructure that will develop advanced AI frontier models like OpenAI's GPT and Anthropic's Claude.
