China's MIIT Head Meets Apple CEO Tim Cook in Beijing

Li Lecheng, the Minister of Industry and Information Technology, had a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in Beijing on Wednesday. The two discussed various topics, including Apple's growth strategy in China and ways to improve collaboration in the electronics and information industry.

Li remarked that China's expansive market and all-encompassing industrial framework present significant opportunities for investment and consumption, as stated in a press release from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Li stated that China is steadfast in its commitment to high-standard opening-up and is actively advancing "intelligent industrialization" and "industrial intellectualization." He emphasized that China will persist in creating a conducive business environment for foreign companies, such as Apple.

Li conveyed optimism that Apple will strengthen its presence in the Chinese market, engage actively in China's new industrialization efforts, and work together with its upstream and downstream partners in the industrial chain for innovative growth, as stated in the press announcement.

Cook expressed gratitude to the ministry for its assistance with Apple's expansion efforts in China. He mentioned that Apple will persist in boosting investment in China and enhance the level and depth of its collaboration with the nation to attain mutually beneficial and win-win growth, according to the MIIT announcement.

A day prior, Apple announced that over 90 percent of its production in China is fueled by renewable energy, resulting from a decade-long strong collaboration between Apple and over 100 suppliers in the industry, the company stated.

Expanding on this, the local suppliers of the US tech giant have initiated a 1-billion-yuan ($150 million) investment fund to assist in developing renewable energy infrastructure in China.

On Monday evening, Cook unexpectedly joined a Douyin Apple Store livestream, revealing that pre-orders for the iPhone Air in China will begin at 9 am on October 17, with sales commencing on October 22. This was Cook's initial livestream on the platform since Apple's main store became part of Douyin Mall in August.
