The state-owned Coal India Ltd. (CIL) said that it produced 57.8 million tonnes (MTs) of coal in June, an 8.5 percent decrease from 63.1 million tonnes in the same period the previous year.

To lessen reliance on imports, the government is working to boost output.

All eight of Coal India's subsidiaries reported a decrease in production for the month that ranged from 0.8 percent to 29.8 percent on a year-over-year basis, reaching 100 percent, adding to the overall small decline.

A mixed start to the fiscal year for its various mining activities was indicated by the cumulative output for the April-June 2025 period, which was 183.3 MT, down 3.2 percent from 189.3 MT in the same time last year, according to Coal India.

In the meantime, the amount of dry fuel provided from a coal pithead, known as coal offtake, decreased by 7.4 percent to 60.4 MT in June compared to 65.2 MT in the same month of the previous fiscal year.

Offtake decreased by 4.5 percent to 190.1 MT during the April–June period from 198.9 MT during the same period in the previous fiscal year.

According to experts, the monsoon season typically presents challenges for coal output. As a result, mine output declines, which impacts the dispatch to power plants.

More than 80 percent of the coal produced in the country comes from CIL. CIL produced 781.1 MT of coal in the fiscal year 2024–2025, which was over seven percent less than the company's yearly goal of 838 MT.

Coal India aims for 900 MT of offtake and 875 MT of production in FY26.

Coal India reported its fiscal fourth quarter profits earlier in May, showing a profit of Rs 9,604.02 crore, up 12.04 percent year over year. The company's operating revenue for the reviewed quarter was Rs 37,824.54 crore, a one percent YoY decline.
