EAM Jaishankar to Address the 80th UNGA Today

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will speak at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Saturday (local time), serving as India's main representative during the high-level General Debate.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will also present his remarks in the same session before Jaishankar's address.

Since arriving in New York, the External Affairs Minister has been conducting numerous multilateral and bilateral discussions alongside the UNGA proceedings.

The EAM initially met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday (local time) and confirmed their dedication to strengthening India-US relations and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific through the Quad partnership.

Rubio also acknowledged India's continued participation in various areas, including trade, energy, and critical minerals.

Jaishankar took part in a special informal gathering of European Union Foreign Ministers, organized by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, which brought together ministers from Brazil and Mexico to discuss pressing global concerns such as multilateralism, the India-EU partnership, the Ukraine crisis, the Gaza conflict, energy, and trade.

He also organized a High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries, emphasizing enhanced cooperation, unity, and multilateral participation among developing countries.

 

Jaishankar subsequently organized the second L69 and C10 Joint Ministerial meeting in New York on Wednesday, demonstrating the unified determination of the Global South to advocate for United Nations Security Council reforms.

After this, Jaishankar conducted the Foreign Ministers Meeting (FMM) of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), emphasizing developments in a 12-point action plan presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the FIPIC-III Summit.

External Affairs Minister participated alongside foreign ministers from Japan, Germany, and Brazil in the G4 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, which took place during the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80). During this gathering, the group reaffirmed their dedication to United Nations reform initiatives.

Through a post on X, Jaishankar mentioned that the Foreign Minister engaged in discussions about Security Council expansion and evaluated the current Inter-Governmental Negotiation (IGN) process.

The EAM organized a gathering of BRICS Foreign Ministers, emphasizing the organization's crucial function in fostering multilateralism and positive international cooperation.

Previously, he had also conducted a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, where they addressed bilateral ties and examined the progression of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
