EU Tech Chief, Apple CEO Hold Constructive Talks

European Technology Commissioner Henna Virkkunen held a "constructive" video call with Apple's Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook on Monday, according reports.
The discussion focused on several "topics of common interest," with the spokesperson adding on Wednesday that work on these issues is continuing.
Although the Commission did not disclose specific details of the conversation, the exchange comes at a time when Apple and the European Union remain at odds over compliance with the bloc's digital regulations and the rollout of the company's artificial intelligence features.
Apple has previously announced that its AI-powered Siri capabilities will not be introduced initially on iPhones and iPads in the European Union. The company has argued that regulatory requirements under the EU's digital rules have created uncertainties that could affect user privacy and security. Apple also criticized the European Commission for what it described as a lack of constructive engagement to resolve these concerns and enable the launch of its AI features in the region.
The European Commission, however, has rejected Apple's claims. EU officials have said the delay is not the result of regulatory obstacles but rather Apple's inability to meet the interoperability requirements established under the bloc's rules.

The differing positions highlight the ongoing tensions between Apple and EU regulators as the company works to expand its AI offerings while complying with Europe's strict digital market regulations. Despite these disagreements, the latest discussion between Virkkunen and Cook suggests that both sides remain engaged in dialogue.
