Fervo Energy to Supply 396 MW Geothermal Power to Google

Geothermal energy developer Fervo Energy has signed an agreement to supply 396 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power to Google from its Cape Station project in Utah, highlighting the growing demand for reliable, around-the-clock clean energy in the United States.
Following the announcement, Fervo Energy’s shares rose nearly 14% in premarket trading, reflecting investor optimism around the agreement and the expanding role of geothermal energy in meeting rising electricity demand.
The deal comes as technology companies and other large power consumers seek dependable sources of clean electricity to support energy-intensive operations, particularly data centers. The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing has increased pressure on the U.S. power sector to add new generation capacity while reducing carbon emissions.
Under the agreement, Google will have the option to increase its electricity purchases by approximately 600 MW. If exercised, the additional capacity would bring the total potential power supplied under the arrangement to nearly 1 gigawatt by June 2030, according to Fervo.
The agreement builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. In 2024, Fervo signed a 115-MW power purchase agreement with Google and NV Energy, supporting the addition of geothermal power to Nevada’s electricity grid.

Google and Fervo initially began collaborating through Project Red, Fervo’s geothermal pilot project in Nevada. The project became operational in 2023 and demonstrated the potential of enhanced geothermal systems to produce power using advanced drilling and reservoir technologies.

Fervo’s Cape Station project in Utah is expected to begin operations in 2028. The enhanced geothermal project is designed to provide a consistent source of renewable electricity and could support Google’s potential data center development in the state.

The agreement underscores the increasing interest in geothermal power as utilities and major technology companies look beyond conventional renewable sources to secure stable, low-carbon electricity supplies.
