The Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the year 2026-27 to enhance operational efficiency, bolster accountability, and expedite the modernization of the food grain management system in the country.
The MoU creates an extensive, outcome-oriented structure for FCI, including well-defined yearly objectives related to storage, logistics, quality assurance, technology implementation, and resource management.

A central aim of the agreement is to diminish storage losses and guarantee effective use of storage capacity. It aims to enhance logistics and supply-chain management while reinforcing quality-control systems throughout FCI’s operations.
The framework highlights the importance of digitizing business processes and embracing contemporary information technology solutions. These efforts aim to enhance transparency, operational effectiveness, and real-time oversight of the company's operations.
The MoU also includes provisions for the enhancement of skills and capacity building for FCI employees.
The initiatives aim to assist the organization in embracing new technologies and contemporary systems for the procurement, storage, transportation, and distribution of foodgrains.
Founded in 1965 under the Food Corporations Act, 1964, FCI is vital to India’s food security framework. It manages the acquisition, storage, transport, and distribution of foodgrains for the government. With the significant public funds at stake, effective use of food subsidies and ongoing enhancements in operations continue to be crucial objectives.
A key element of the new framework ties some MoU objectives to the performance of FCI depots via the Depot Darpan Portal, an online platform aimed at evaluating depot infrastructure and operational effectiveness. Benchmarks based on outcomes and targets in the agreement will emphasize enhancing physical infrastructure, advancing depot-level performance, and fostering ongoing operational improvement.

The MoU signifies the government's larger initiative to create a more efficient, transparent, and technology-oriented foodgrain management system. By connecting performance to quantifiable results, the framework aims to enhance the use of public resources and reinforce the resilience of India’s food security system.
Previously, the Government of India’s Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) along with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the financial year 2024-25. This agreement seeks to enhance the effectiveness and responsibility in the acquisition and distribution of food grains.

The MoU outlines particular performance standards, especially for FCI depots, aiming to enhance the use of public funds for food security initiatives. Important efficiency metrics for FCI depots encompass capacity usage, reducing operational losses, enhancing security protocols, and updating processes through automation.
This initiative demonstrates the central government's dedication to enhancing the Public Distribution System (PDS) and guaranteeing the efficient use of food subsidy funds by improving the overall effectiveness of FCI’s operations and its warehouses.
