Google DeepMind Launches New AI Research Lab in Singapore

Google DeepMind has established a new AI research lab in Singapore, emphasizing cooperation with the government, corporations, civil society, and academic institutions in the area.
The Singapore team will include research scientists, software engineers, operations specialists, and AI impact professionals. The tech giant stated that operations have started and hiring is in progress.
In reply to inquiries from the media, Google did not disclose the number of employees it intends to hire or the amount it is investing in the research lab.
While announcing the new lab at Google’s Singapore office located in Mapletree Business Park on Wednesday, Ms. Lila Ibrahim, chief operating officer of Google DeepMind, noted that Singapore’s progressive outlook makes it an “ideal place” for the lab.

She mentioned that although they are still honing their research agenda, some areas of focus they are considering include education, learning, and healthcare.
The media and partners attended the announcement event, including representatives from the Economic Development Board (EDB) and AI Singapore.
DeepMind was established in the UK in 2010 and purchased by Google in 2014. In addition to London, its headquarters, it operates offices in India and Japan. Singapore marks its inaugural office in Southeast Asia.

The lab's significant achievements comprise creating AlphaGo, the initial computer program to conquer a Go world champion.
Google DeepMind is the force behind Gemini, a collection of AI models from Google that can comprehend and produce text, code, images, audio, and videos.

EDB's managing director Jermaine Loy stated that the partnership will generate fresh prospects for Singapore's talent and research sectors.
It will also grant them access to “top-tier AI tools” for scientific research and exploration.
CNA's investigations on job portals like MyCareersFuture revealed that the lab was seeking to fill positions including research scientists specializing in multimodal generative AI and software engineers focused on medical AI.
During the launch, EDB’s executive vice president, Mr. Chan Ih-Ming, mentioned that numerous large multinationals gain advantages from hiring students from local universities.
