Google to Launch Powerful AI Data Center

According to reports, Google intends to establish a significant artificial intelligence data center on Christmas Island, a remote territory in the Indian Ocean belonging to Australia, following a cloud agreement made with the Department of Defence earlier this year.
Proposals for the data centre on the small island situated 350 km (220 miles) south of Indonesia have not been disclosed before, and many specifics such as its expected dimensions, expenses, and possible applications are still undisclosed.
Military experts indicate that such a base would be an important resource on the island, which defence officials increasingly view as a vital frontline for observing Chinese submarine and other maritime operations in the Indian Ocean.

Google is in detailed negotiations to lease land close to the airport on the island for building the data center, which also involves an arrangement with a regional mining firm to fulfill its energy requirements, Christmas Island Shire representatives informed Reuters, and council meeting documents indicate.

A recent tabletop war game featuring the Australian, US, and Japanese forces emphasized Christmas Island's importance as a frontline defense for Australia in potential regional conflicts, especially its benefits for deploying uncrewed weapon systems.
Bryan Clark, a former strategist for the US Navy who oversaw the war games, stated that establishing a forward "command and control" node on Christmas Island would be essential during a crisis with China or another opponent.

"The data center is designed in part to enable the AI-driven command and control necessary for future operations, particularly if you depend on unmanned systems for surveillance, targeting, and engagement tasks," states Clark, currently a fellow at the Hudson Institute.
