IIT Kharagpur Signs MoU with Russian Varsity

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has formed a strategic academic collaboration with Empress Catherine II Saint Petersburg Mining University in Russia by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a virtual event.

The collaboration seeks to enhance student and scholar exchange initiatives, facilitate faculty exchanges for collaborative scientific research, and create joint academic programs for both students and working professionals, according to a statement by IIT Kharagpur.

The MoU was executed during a virtual event attended by Prof Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of Saint Petersburg Mining University, and Prof Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur.

Both scholars emphasized the significance of enhancing Indo-Russian collaboration in higher education, research, and technological advancements.

The partnership will utilize the sophisticated research facilities and knowledge of both organizations in fields like Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Rubber Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, and AI applications in energy and earth sciences.

This cooperation enhances the enduring alliance between India and Russia in the fields of Science and Technology, as per reports.

The MoU is anticipated to play a crucial role in meeting changing energy demands - from traditional coal and oil sources to minerals essential for energy transition - while promoting workforce development and technological advancements, according to reports.

 

On September 15, 1956, the Indian Parliament enacted legislation referred to as the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act, designating this Institute as one of national significance.

The Institute was granted the designation of an independent University. Beginning with this humble foundation in 1950, IIT Kharagpur has been continuously evolving, now encompassing approximately 27 academic departments and schools, along with 7 centres of excellence. The extensive campus, filled with trees and covering 2100 acres, contains a self-sufficient community of more than 15,000 residents.
