India, Mauritius Expand Energy Ties Beyond Crude, Petroleum

India and Mauritius plan to enhance their energy collaboration beyond traditional petroleum products to include clean and renewable fuels, as Mauritius has established a National Biofuel Policy Framework, stated Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
Puri stated that the energy collaboration between the two nations would progressively encompass future energy security and cleaner fuel sources, enhancing their current partnership in petroleum products.
“India-Mauritius energy partnership is now not only limited to today’s needs, but is also moving towards future energy security and clean energy,” Puri said in a post on X.

Puri stated that Mauritius is a founding member of the Global Biofuels Alliance and has developed its National Biofuel Policy Framework with assistance from the alliance. This opens up possibilities for increased collaboration between the two nations in clean and sustainable energy sources, extending beyond crude oil and refined fuel products.
The minister stated that India's increasing refining capacity and status as a net exporter of refined petroleum products are enabling the country to contribute more significantly to the energy security of allied nations.
“India’s energy strength is now a strength for our friends as well,” Puri says, adding that as uncertainty around energy supplies grows globally, India can serve as a reliable and stable energy source for its partners.

According to Puri, India presently possesses 23 refineries that process approximately 270 million metric tonnes of crude oil each year. He stated that the nation's refining capacity is being increased, and its refining capability should be regarded not just as an advantage but also as a duty to continue being a reliable energy ally.
“India’s refining power is now not just our strength, but also our responsibility and our global credibility,” Puri says.
He stated that the partnership between India and Mauritius illustrated how India’s energy strengths could bolster the economic stability of allied nations. The partnership would assist Mauritius in enhancing its energy security while also generating prospects for future cooperation in sustainable fuels.

Puri noted that the recent agreements signify a wider transformation in the bilateral energy connection, as the collaboration shifts from addressing immediate fuel needs to focusing on long-term partnerships in energy security and cleaner options.
“This G2G and B2B agreements mark a new chapter in India-Mauritius energy cooperation,” he says, adding that Mauritius’ new biofuel policy framework “opens the way for deeper cooperation in clean and sustainable fuels, beyond crude and refined products.”
Puri stated that the development arises as India aims to leverage its refining and energy resources not only for its own needs but also to enhance the energy security of allied nations.
