A teenage girl whose legal action served as a test case in lawsuits against social media firms for allegedly addicting youth and contributing to a mental health crisis withdrew her allegations against the operators of Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Snapchat on Thursday, as stated in a court document.

The plaintiff, a 15-year-old girl from New Jersey referred to in California court documents as P. M-Y., claimed that the owners of the platforms—Meta Platforms, Google, and Snap Inc—played a role in her social media dependency, depression, and self-harm.

The firms stated she withdrew her allegations without receiving any compensation. TikTok, also a defendant in her case, had earlier resolved her claims.

Emily Jeffcott, a lawyer for P.M-Y., stated that her client decided to withdraw the rest of her claims to continue with her life.

Jeffcott stated that she "started this effort to make social media companies responsible and to advocate for reforms to safeguard young individuals like her."

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, is currently facing two trials regarding allegations from states that it created its platforms to be addictive for children and deceived the public about their safety. A trial that started this week, addressing the claims from 29 states, is taking place in federal court in Oakland, California, while another trial involving claims from Tennessee is happening in state court in Nashville.

Legal actions are part of thousands filed by individuals, states, and school districts against social media firms over allegations that their platforms harm children. The firms have refuted the claims and assert they implement comprehensive measures to protect teens and young users on their platforms.

P. M-Y.'s legal action was one of over 3,300 personal injury lawsuits filed by individuals that were grouped together in California state court in Los Angeles. It was chosen as one of three "bellwether" or trial cases set to proceed in October.

Lawyers frequently rely on bellwether verdicts to understand how juries might perceive comparable claims, assisting them in evaluating the possible worth of other cases and steering settlement discussions.
