By the end of the year, millions more individuals might have access to receiving smaller, lightweight Amazon packages via drones, according to a plan the company revealed on Wednesday to extend aerial shipping to suburban regions in almost 500 U.S. cities.

Amazon stated in a news release that customers might get their drone deliveries in as little as 30 minutes. The drones are capable of transporting packages weighing up to 5 pounds.

The strategy will escalate the competition between Amazon and Walmart to offer customers the quickest delivery times. Both companies depend on a combination of drones and drivers to distribute all items that customers have requested.

Amazon's strategy aims to increase its drone delivery service more than six times across the country, reaching hundreds of additional communities, such as the metropolitan regions of Chicago, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Boise.

The drones will mainly operate in the suburbs, far from skyscrapers and large airports that might create issues.

Amazon drones have already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages this year, yet even with this growth, drones will manage only a small portion of the hundreds of millions of deliveries annually.

Along with being limited to carrying just 5 pounds, the drones Amazon develops encounter numerous obstacles such as tree cover, landscaping, and inflatable pools, complicating their ability to locate suitable drop zones.

Walmart employs drones in selected areas for its delivery service; however, the main aspect of its network depends on drivers who transport orders straight from stores to customers.

Walmart did not quickly reply on Wednesday to Amazon's announcement; however, the retail giant stated earlier this year that it intended to broaden its drone delivery service to 150 additional stores in collaboration with Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, aiming for 270 drone delivery sites by 2027.
