Strategic analysts predict that the India-UK alliance will remain strong with the upcoming British prime minister Andy Burnham, who secured Labour Party leadership during the same week the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) became effective.

Burnham, 56, was elected without opposition on Friday and will succeed Keir Starmer at Downing Street on Monday after the official process of power transfer is finalized.

Although many changes are anticipated due to the former mayor of Greater Manchester's commitment to a new approach, a significant constant in foreign policy is expected to remain regarding India.

"Throughout the last year, we have appreciated the close collaboration with the Greater Manchester authorities, especially  Andy Burnham, whose enthusiasm and friendly backing have significantly enhanced the relationship between India and North England," says Vishakha Yaduvanshi, the Consul General of India in Manchester.

Yaduvanshi, the inaugural leader of India’s new diplomatic mission in the UK, regards the Consulate's inauguration in March last year as a "significant milestone" that highlights the vast potential of northern England, including "its industries, academia, and sporting culture" in the India-UK relationship.

"His [Burnham's] 2019 trip to India, discussions with the past Indian high commissioner [Vikram Doraiswami] in December 2025, and his online involvement in the India-North England Opportunity Summit [March 2026] demonstrate a deep dedication to this collaboration," she stated.

Burnham has recalled "fond memories" from the trip that included Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi seven years prior, organized by the Manchester India Partnership (MIP), a group established for businesses and universities to connect with India.

"India plays a vital role in Greater Manchester's strategy for internationalization as it offers considerable opportunities for the city-region; however, these opportunities are reciprocal, with Greater Manchester also contributing to India's economic growth initiatives," he stated at that time.
