L&T Builds Main Part of 1,600 MW Thermal Power Plant, Jharkhand

Larsen & Toubro’s Energy CarbonLite Solutions division has been issued a limited notice to proceed by DVC CIL Power Private Ltd for the primary plant package of the 2 x 800 MW Chandrapura thermal power project located in Jharkhand.
L&T has categorized the order as ‘Major’, signifying a value ranging from Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 10,000 crore. The contract holds great importance for L&T's traditional energy sector, though it is still reliant on obtaining project approvals and turning into a complete notice to proceed.
DVC CIL Power is a collaborative enterprise formed by Damodar Valley Corporation and Coal India Ltd. L&T stated that the joint venture will send out the notice to proceed once it has secured the necessary environmental clearances and after the limited notice period concludes.
The Chandrapura facility will feature a total generation capacity of 1,600 MW through a pair of 800 MW ultra-supercritical units.
L&T’s responsibilities encompass the design, engineering, production, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of boilers, steam turbines, generators, and electrostatic precipitators. It also includes related mechanical, electrical, control, and instrumentation systems, in addition to civil works.

Within the specified order-value range, the project represents roughly 1.7 percent to 3.5 percent of L&T's FY26 total revenue from operations amounting to Rs 2,85,874 crore. The project's eventual implementation would thus offer a significant enhancement to the group's already substantial power and energy order pipeline.
The progress also comes after improved performance in L&T’s traditional energy sector in the June quarter of FY27. The company reported a 14 per cent year-on-year increase in revenue within its Energy Conventional segment, primarily fueled by greater execution in CarbonLite Solutions. Nonetheless, new order intake in the segment dropped during the quarter because of postponed awards and a strong baseline from previous CarbonLite Solutions successes.

The Chandrapura award may assist in closing that gap in new orders, although the timing of complete mobilization will rely on environmental approvals. This qualification is crucial as an LNTP permits initial work and does not signify an unconditional complete project start.
L&T stated that ultra-supercritical technology would enhance thermal efficiency and reduce specific emissions in comparison to traditional coal-fired generation. The initiative emphasizes the ongoing significance of high-efficiency thermal capacity in India’s energy blend as industrial growth and economic activities increase baseload power demands.

T Madhava Das, Senior Executive Vice President and Whole-time Director for Energy Hydrocarbon at L&T, stated that the short notice strengthened the company’s stance in the thermal power industry and broadened its relationship with government power utilities.
The order complements L&T’s wider energy portfolio, which includes traditional thermal and hydrocarbon projects, along with offshore wind, green hydrogen, and solar-related ventures. At the conclusion of the June quarter of FY27, its total Order Book was approximately Rs 7.79 lakh crore, offering multi-year visibility for execution in infrastructure, energy, manufacturing, and services.
