Modi, Merz Hold CEO Meet to Boost India-Germany Economic Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in delegation-level discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad during the latter's initial official trip to India. The two-day official visit of the German Chancellor coincides with the commemoration of 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, aiming to enhance the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

In attendance at the meeting held at the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar were External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

The talks concentrated on fortifying trade, investment, technology, education, skilling, mobility, defense, security, science, innovation, research, and sustainable development cooperation between India and Germany.

Before the meeting, Prime Minister Modi warmly received Chancellor Merz at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, where the German leader's first official visit to India since taking office was commemorated.

After paying respects to Mahatma Gandhi at the Ashram, Merz signed the visitors' book.

Subsequently, both leaders jointly inaugurated the International Kite Festival 2026 at the Sabarmati Riverfront, emphasizing the cultural and diplomatic significance of Chancellor Merz's visit. In a symbolic gesture, they were observed flying a kite featuring Lord Hanuman.

Earlier in the day, the German Federal Chancellor arrived in India for a two-day official trip, the first of its kind since assuming the position.

This visit is expected to deepen the existing high-level political exchanges and reaffirm the shared vision of India and Germany to establish a progressive partnership, benefiting both countries and the global community.

 

Chancellor Merz's visit to India spans from January 12 to January 13, including visits to Bosch, Nano Science and Engineering, CeNSE, before departing for Germany on the latter date. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Merz previously met at the G7 Summit in Canada, where they agreed to broaden the bilateral strategic partnership and set the groundwork for the German leader's official visit to New Delhi.

This visit is strategically timed ahead of the India-EU Summit scheduled for January 27, further underscoring the commitment to enhancing ties between India and Europe.
