As part of his visit to London, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is scheduled to discuss the implementation of the India-UK free trade deal with his British colleague Jonathan Reynolds.

Earlier on May 6, India and the UK declared that their free trade agreement (FTA) was complete.

The agreement intends to ease imports of UK goods like automobiles and whisky while removing tariffs on labor-intensive Indian exports like leather, footwear, and apparel.

By 2030, the two economies' commerce is expected to quadruple to $120 billion, according to the deal.

The contract has not yet been properly signed and put into effect. Goyal is also anticipated to meet with Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, to talk on investment facilitation and other macroeconomic issues. He also plans to meet separately with Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport Lisa Nandy.

The minister will take part in several important events during the India Global Forum (IGF), such as the Future Frontiers Forum, the Mainstage Plenary Session, and a special roundtable called "From Agreement to Action: UK-India FTA."

These forums will offer chances to discuss the changing features of the India-UK economic corridor and the FTA's transformative potential with world leaders, investors, and policy specialists. Additionally, he might run into executives from a variety of industries, such as advanced manufacturing, fintech, shipping, and logistics.

India and the UK's bilateral trade grew from $20.36 billion in 2022–2023 to $21.34 billion in 2023–2024.

Goyal also recently chaired a high-level assessment meeting in Guntur to evaluate the Andhra Pradesh industrial nodes of the NICDC. Orvakal Industrial Area under the Hyderabad–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, Krishnapatnam Industrial Area under the Chennai–Bengaluru Industrial Corridor, and Kopparthy Industrial Area under the Visakhapatnam–Chennai Industrial Corridor were the three main nodes that were the focus of the review.

Goyal stressed at the conference the importance of creating innovation-friendly ecosystems in order to draw in companies and anchor investors. To promote early-stage businesses and build strong startup ecosystems, he advised government to set up specialized incubators. Plans were also considered to designate particular areas within each node for MSMEs and startups, offering them cutting-edge infrastructure, advanced technological support, and subsidized prices.

Goyal also advocated for improved monitoring systems and proactive international involvement. He suggested the establishment of a centralized dashboard for real-time project progress monitoring and argued for the holding of country-specific investment conclaves to attract targeted international investments. In order to guarantee the supply of top-notch infrastructure, he also emphasized the significance of using sophisticated testing and quality control procedures.
