PM, Brazilian President Urge Close Ties between India, Brazil

Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, wherein he mentioned his intention to host the South American leader in India in the near future. The Prime Minister underscored the significance of strong collaboration between India and Brazil in furthering the common goals of the Global South.
The president of Brazil is scheduled to travel to India as both nations gear up for enhanced diplomatic interactions in light of the current trade tensions with the US.

Additionally, Modi received a phone call from the President of Brazil during which the two leaders emphasized the significance of reformed multilateralism in tackling common challenges.
The prime minister expressed anticipation for the imminent visit of the Brazilian president to India.
"Glad to speak with President Lula. We reviewed the strong momentum in the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership, which is poised to scale new heights in the year ahead," Modi said in a post on X.
"Our close cooperation is vital for advancing the shared interests of the Global South. I look forward to welcoming him to India soon," he adds.

"The leaders also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They also underscored the importance of reformed multilateralism in addressing shared challenges," it says.
Brazilian President Lula disclosed that he engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Modi regarding the enforcement of unilateral tariffs, following the implementation of a 50 percent tariff by US President Trump on both nations. Subsequently, in November, Trump rescinded the 40 percent tariffs placed on select Brazilian food items.
President Lula has previously articulated apprehensions regarding the implications of these trade policies, asserting that President Trump's actions are indicative of a desire to undermine the principles of multilateralism.
India's trade with Brazil has experienced significant expansion, with the total merchandise trade between the two countries amounting to $ 12.19 billion in the fiscal year 2024-2025, establishing Brazil as India's primary trading partner in the Latin America and Caribbean region.
Both leaders have come to a mutual understanding to maintain open lines of communication and to further enhance cooperation in the sectors of agriculture, healthcare, and interpersonal relationships.
The two leaders stated their determination to enhance the India-Brazil Strategic Partnership and elevate it to new heights in the upcoming year.

Reflecting on their previous encounters in Brasilia and South Africa, the two leaders expressed contentment with the notable advancements made in various realms of mutual collaboration, encompassing trade and investment, technology, defense, energy, health, agriculture, and interpersonal connections.
