Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the significance of ensuring the democratization of artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent humans from being reduced to mere data points or treated solely as raw materials.

“We need to democratise AI. We need to make it a means for inclusion and empowerment, especially in the Global South...we also need to provide an open sky for AI and keep command in our hands just like GPS that suggests our route, but we take the final call on which direction we will go”, Modi says here at the inaugural session of the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

Modi stated that the goal of India in the field of artificial intelligence is effectively highlighted by the summit's theme of promoting welfare and happiness for all, emphasizing that this standard is crucial for the country.

With regards to employment, the Prime Minister observed that the trajectory of artificial intelligence in the workforce is not predetermined, but will be shaped by collaborative choices and initiatives.

“AI will also open higher-value, creative, and meaningful roles for more people, creating opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship, and new industries. We have to make skilling, reskilling, and lifelong learning a mass movement,” he says.

The evolution of work presents a fresh prospect, ushering in a period where individuals and intelligent technologies collaborate, work together, and develop in tandem. He emphasized that AI has the potential to enhance labor by making it more intelligent, productive, and influential, facilitating superior planning, quicker execution, and enhanced decision-making capabilities.

Modi emphasized the importance of transparency as the ultimate protection. He stated that although some countries and corporations view AI as a strategic asset to be nurtured in secrecy, India holds the belief that AI will be advantageous to the world only through mutual sharing.

The promotion of open source code and collaborative development was highlighted by Modi, asserting that this approach will empower countless young individuals to enhance the quality and safety of AI. He urged for a united effort in the advancement of AI as a universal benefit for all. He also pointed out the pressing necessity for universal standards due to the prevalence of deepfakes and manipulated content that are undermining democratic societies.

“Just like we see nutrition labels on food, digital content too must carry authenticity labels so people can distinguish between real and AI-generated material. There is a growing need for watermarking and clear source standards as AI increasingly generates text, images, and videos, to build trust into technology from the start,” he mentioned.

Highlighting the significance of ensuring child safety, the Prime Minister underscored the need for the AI space to be tailored in a manner similar to school curriculums, with an emphasis on family guidance and safety measures.

He stated that India envisions great promise and potential in artificial intelligence, supported by its wealth of talent, energy resources, and clear policy direction.

He highlighted the unveiling of AI models and applications by three Indian companies at the Summit as evidence of the caliber of India's youthful talent and the breadth and variety of solutions that India is offering to the worldwide AI arena.
