PM Modi Meets Naspers Chairman, CEO in Johannesburg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the chairman and CEO of Naspers during the G20 Leaders' Summit to talk about increasing investments in India's digital ecosystem. Modi met with Chairman Koos Bekker and CEO Fabricio Bloisi of the South African multinational internet and technology company.

The discussions focussed on “expanding investments in India’s digital ecosystem, AI, Startup and space sectors and exploring new avenues in consumer market and technology”, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a social media post.

“Naspers’ success in India reflects ease of doing business and the strength of the startup ecosystem in India,” he adds.

Deepening investment linkages featured prominently in the discussions. It is commendable how Naspers is actively working with our talented youth across diverse sectors,” Modi said on X.

Modi also held a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss the advancements made in various areas of collaboration such as defense, security, critical minerals, trade, investment, and interpersonal relationships.

Modi held a meeting with Albanese shortly after his arrival in South Africa for the G20 Leaders' Summit. Modi was greeted with a warm and elaborate reception upon his arrival at Waterkloof Air Force Base (AFB) in Gauteng. The inaugural G20 Summit in Africa is currently taking place.

Africa joined the G20 as a member during India's leadership in 2023.

 

During his trip to South Africa for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, Modi also met with the Indian-origin tech entrepreneur community in the country. The Prime Minister is in Johannesburg and encouraged them to enhance their involvement with India. He stated in a social media post that his discussion with Indian-origin tech entrepreneurs about their work in FinTech, social media platforms, agriculture, education, healthcare, medical devices, and other areas was productive.

PM Modi recognized the Indian community's significant role in acting as a connection between the two nations, acknowledging the 1.7 million-strong Indian diaspora in South Africa for their efforts in maintaining the longstanding friendship between India and South Africa. He praised their work in assisting young people to engage with the legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

“Also asked them to boost the popularity of Indian culture among the people of South Africa, including practices such as Yoga, Ayurveda,” he wrote on X.

“They shared their experiences on various issues and were very appreciative of India’s strides across different fields. Urged them to keep up the momentum with which they are enhancing people-to-people linkages,” the PM added.
