Varadarajan is set to assume his role on January 19, becoming a member of the company's Executive Leadership Team, and will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol, Starbucks announced.

He will be taking over from Deb Hall Lefevre, who retired in September. During his tenure at Amazon, Varadarajan dedicated nearly two decades towards the development of extensive technology platforms with a strong focus on customer satisfaction.

His most recent role involved managing technology and supply chain operations for the Worldwide Grocery Stores division. Prior to this, he gained experience as a software engineer at Oracle and collaborated with multiple startup companies.

Starbucks announced that Varadarajan possesses extensive expertise in crafting secure and dependable systems, as well as expanding technology to enhance operational efficiency while prioritizing customer satisfaction.

Varadarajan, a graduate of the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), has obtained a master's degree in civil engineering from Purdue University and a master's degree in computer science from the University of Washington.

Starbucks announced that the appointment of Varadarajan is anticipated to expedite its technology endeavors and enhance digital proficiency throughout its worldwide operations.

Meanwhile, Starbucks is currently in the initial phases of a revitalization process led by Niccol, who assumed the role of CEO in September 2024. During the latest quarter, Starbucks saw an increase in same-store sales, marking the first growth in almost two years. This development indicates that the company's tactics are successfully attracting back previous customers.

Additionally, holiday sales for the season have been robust, despite facing challenges from a strike among unionized baristas at a limited number of its locations.

One component of the company's strategy involves its hospitality platform, Green Apron Service, a significant investment of $500 million in labor. This initiative is supported by enhancements aimed at ensuring adequate staffing levels and improved technology to enhance service delivery speed. The inception of this program stemmed from the increasing prevalence of digital orders, which now account for over 30 percent of total sales, as well as input provided by baristas.
