US Official Warns Against Weaponizing Digital Sovereignty

A high-ranking US official warned that the idea of digital and artificial intelligence sovereignty risks being exploited by various foreign political factions, encouraging countries not to "waste" billions of dollars on "recreating" a technology that is already available.
US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg spoke at the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit in this location.
"I believe that sovereignty is derived from actively contributing to the global innovation ecosystem." "It's about innovation sovereignty, not merely whether you completely manage last year's stack internally," Helberg stated.
He stated that the concept of sovereignty is highly attractive and seems to greatly empower the populace.
"The risk lies in the fact that various political entities abroad are manipulating that idea to imply that we intend to reconstruct the entire infrastructure internally from beginning to end to achieve sovereignty," he stated.
He stated that the notion of a country lacking sovereignty if it did not oversee its entire artificial intelligence stack was "extremely misguided" and economically risky.

"Because this indicates that these nations will invest billions of dollars in resources to recreate something that is already present." "They are probably going to achieve significantly poor outcomes," he stated.
"All that engineering strength and all those funds are assets that could be used for creating the next breakthrough, instead of settling for an inferior version of last year's breakthroughs," he remarked.
