The Trump administration is contemplating the need for US government regulation of artificial intelligence models prior to their public release, marking a significant change from the earlier hands-off stance on the technology, as per reports.

The White House is considering an executive order to create a task force of technology leaders and government representatives to explore possible review processes for new AI models, according to reports.

According to the report, last week senior administration officials informed executives from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI about certain plans during meetings.

The change signifies a significant turn from the administration's previous position.

Trump positioned himself as a proponent of unrestricted AI advancement, reversing Biden-era safety assessment mandates and depicting regulation as a danger to America's competitiveness against China.

In 2023, the Biden administration issued an executive order mandating that AI developers provide safety test results to the government and instructed federal agencies to establish standards for the technology, actions Trump reversed soon after assuming office.

However, growing public worry regarding AI's influence on employment, energy expenses, education, and mental well-being -- combined with bipartisan apprehension in Congress -- seems to have altered the calculations, according to reports.

The direct trigger was the arrival of a strong new AI system named Mythos, developed by the San Francisco-based company Anthropic.

The firm has characterized the model's capacity to detect software security flaws as possibly resulting in a cybersecurity crisis and has opted not to make it publicly available.

Officials in the administration seek to prevent political repercussions from a severe AI-driven cyberattack and are also assessing if sophisticated models can provide beneficial capabilities for the Pentagon and intelligence agencies.

A White House representative informed the Times that chatter regarding a possible executive order was "speculation" and stated that Trump would personally announce any policy decisions.
