V. R Muthu, the Chairman of V.V.V. & Sons Edible Oils Limited and the esteemed business figure responsible for the renowned Idhayam edible oils brand, succumbed to illness on 4 March 2026 at the age of 72.

Muthu was highly esteemed for his role in elevating Idhayam into a reputable edible oil brand in South India, specifically in the sesame oil segment.

Through his leadership, he played a pivotal role in expanding a local, family-owned business into a well-known household name throughout Tamil Nadu and neighboring southern markets.

Established in 1986 in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, Idhayam was founded by V. V. V. Rajendran. During that period, sesame oil was primarily distributed as an unbranded product in nearby grocery stores. Recognizing a gap in the market, the company saw the potential to offer packaged, high-quality gingelly oil, thus pioneering a new segment in branded edible oils.

When Muthu assumed control of the company, his primary objective was to enhance the brand's image and broaden its market penetration. Through his guidance, Idhayam committed resources to ensure unwavering quality standards, unique packaging, and an efficient distribution network, resulting in the establishment of customer confidence within a sector historically characterized by informal oil transactions. The brand "Idhayam," meaning "heart" in Tamil, was strategically aligned with principles of purity, genuineness, and familial health, all of which deeply connected with households in South India.

One of Muthu's primary accomplishments was transforming sesame oil into a high-quality packaged product instead of a common commodity. Through an emphasis on purity and traditional cooking methods, the brand effectively established itself as an essential ingredient in Tamil households.

Idhayam's marketing approach centered on narratives that emphasize the importance of family and cultural significance, highlighting the concept of genuine cooking using premium materials.

Throughout its evolution, the brand has collaborated with notable figures from the Tamil film industry, such as Jyothika, to enhance its relationship with customers. By utilizing a cohesive strategy involving memorable brand recognition, consistent product quality, and widespread retail presence, Idhayam established itself as the dominating force in the branded sesame oil market sector in Tamil Nadu. Sesame oil continued to be the primary product of focus for the company, however, over time, the company diversified its product range to include various other edible oils.

A notable addition was the Mantra range, which represented the company's venture into the groundnut oil sector. In spite of these enhancements, Idhayam maintained a coherent brand strategy, choosing to highlight its primary expertise in traditional cooking oils rather than pursuing extensive expansion into unrelated FMCG sectors.

Under Muthu's leadership, the company experienced significant growth, evolving from a small regional operation to a multimillion-dollar FMCG corporation. The company now boasts a substantial foothold in the South Indian market and has expanded its reach to cater to the global demand of the Indian diaspora. Industry experts frequently refer to Idhayam as a prime illustration of effective development of a regional brand, showcasing the ability of concentrating on a single product, maintaining high standards, and utilizing emotional brand narratives to establish lasting customer loyalty.

Muthu was recognized not only for his accomplishments in the business world, but also for his charitable efforts and dedication to various social causes, notably through his participation in Rotary and community development projects. Upon his demise, the Indian FMCG sector and the business community of Tamil Nadu have suffered the loss of a visionary leader who had a significant impact in establishing a highly esteemed regional brand in the edible oil industry. His influence lives on through the enduring popularity of the Idhayam brand, which has become closely associated with sesame oil for numerous households in South India.
