Tell us about your professional background and experience. What inspired you to start this venture into entrepreneurship and what drives you today?
I am a product designer and was into developing and designing Medical Devices. When I had my 1st child, doctors said my baby was suffering from jaundice and she had to be shifted to a pediatric hospital which was 50 miles away. We as parents were worried for our baby and the anxiety was not tolerable. When I visited my baby, I have seen the device and realized that I have worked for that product and it was a triggering point for me to dedicate myself to work in the field of newborn care.

I started my entrepreneurial Journey in a Bio-Design, Healthcare Entrepreneurship Fellowship program from CfHE, IIT Hyderabad. During the clinical immersion, I and my team had an affinity toward maternal and childcare needs and understood that jaundice is one of the neglected needs in the field of neonatology.

How would you define Heamac Healthcare as an organization and its position in the market? What
is the unique proposition that your organization offers to its clients?
Heamac Is a design and Empathy driven startup which is focused to solve the unmet needs in Maternal and Child Health. We have started focusing on the maternal and child care sector where Newborn Jaundice is the most neglected problem. In high income countries, Newborn jaundice is easily treated with phototherapy and rarely leads to kernicterus, it is a type of preventable brain damage that can occur if severe jaundice goes untreated. In low and middle income countries, however, kernicterus ranks as the seventh leading cause of mortality in Newborns. The only solution for critical cases is Blood Transfusion and it is highly reported in the lower pyramid sector but the chances of survival are nascent post blood transfusion, so prevention is the only solution.

If you have an idea then be bold & pursue it

Our customers are Maternal and Child Care Hospitals both Govt. and Private and we are also targeting Pediatric clinics which serve small towns and in resource constrained settings. We have collaborated with QMS ISO 13485 Medical Device Manufacturing and Distribution partner for the large scale Product Deployment. Heamac sees vast potential in the area as the market size for neonatal Phototherapy devices is USD 1.2 billion for India alone.

Tell us about the challenges you face in your position and how you overcome those challenges.
Entrepreneurship is a challenging journey and it's not always glamorous as it portrays from the outside as it requires a lot of patience and determination to stick to the journey. Along with the scarcity in supply of semiconductors, the next challenge was to find a local vendor in Hyderabad which consumed a larger chunk of our time, and this process should be as per ISO13485 Medical device Safety standards. We have overcome all these obstacles and had developed our final product and are heading to clinical evaluation in Maternal and Child hospitals in Hyderabad.

How do you maintain the perfect balance between your personal and professional life? What is your success mantra?
I believe that one who is in bliss by him/herself can spread the same to others. My Guru had always told me that Design is a never ending process, and we always try to make it much better than today. It is always better to have something than nothing, So I always try to add
some value to both my personal and professional life and being consistent is the key to a sustainable and successful life.
