In spite of their size and scope, each unit remains relatively small and basic. This is due to the fact that micro-enterprises struggle to progress into medium or large enterprises, a phenomenon known as the "missing middle" dilemma. Challenges related to finances, regulations, technology, and operations make it difficult for MSMEs to expand. This is a key factor why 97 percent of jobs are generated by micro-enterprises exclusively. As a result of the limitations faced by micro-enterprises in growing into larger entities, the majority of businesses in India operate on a micro scale. These numerous micro units employ the vast majority of the MSE workforce, showing their heavy reliance on manual labor and limited use of technology or other capital assets to streamline production costs.
