Over the last few years, we have seen a massive increase in cognizance and consumption of preventive healthcare across all age groups and income levels. A great reflection of this is the 20 million unique monthly searches taking place on Google linked to ‘fitness near me’. The fitness industry too has evolved rapidly from its nascent unstructured beginning in the early 90s to a comprehensive ecosystem today including consumers, providers, adjacent industries, facilitators, and government.
According to industry studies of the Indian retail fitness services market, there are six million active users in India who are spending on an average $350-400 annually towards fitness services, amounting to $2.6 billion market size. The wellness market in India registered a growth rate of 18-20 percent during 2012, to touch a market size of $700 billion. In fact, by recognizing 'Wellness' as one of the priority sectors in its ‘Make in India’ campaign, the government has given impetus to the sector.
Owing to such fertile conditions, many fitness & wellness businesses are mushrooming with each passing day. As a result, the competition in this vertical has seen a hockey stick growth.
One of the high profile acquisitions was the acquisition of Cult Fitness by CureFit, a fitness health startup cofounded by former Flipkart senior executive Mukesh Bansal. Witnessing the mammoth opportunities this industry offers, many individuals, including fitness enthusiasts, celebrities and eminent sportspersons are foraying into this domain and have created a niche for themselves through innovative offerings.
