AstraZeneca Plc and Bristol Myers Squibb engaged in initial talks regarding a potential merger that could establish one of the largest pharmaceutical firms globally, worth almost $400 billion, as per reports.

A possible agreement would involve regulatory risk due to worries about its evaluation by US antitrust regulators under President Donald Trump's administration, as per reports.

Trump has concentrated on local investments in the industry and increasing manufacturing in the US.

Last year, AstraZeneca revealed intentions for a direct listing in the US, seeking to benefit from higher valuations in the American market; however, this transaction would result in a UK-based firm essentially acquiring a significant US pharmaceutical leader.

During Pascal Soriot's 14-year leadership as CEO, AstraZeneca's stock price has increased over fourfold, surpassing the broader FTSE 100 index and its primary British competitor GSK.

Results from the second quarter last week indicated that robust demand for cancer and rare-disease medications continues to propel AstraZeneca's expansion.

In 2025, cancer treatments represented approximately $25 billion in sales, nearly 50% of the total, while treatments for cardiovascular, renal, and metabolism issues amounted to around $12 billion.

Oncology medications represented over 40% of Bristol Myers' total sales during the initial half of 2026, and the cancer immunotherapies from the two firms are in direct competition.

Andre Barlow, an antitrust lawyer at DBM Law Group, noted that a Trump FTC would likely examine the merger carefully, and if there are major overlaps in specific drugs and late-stage pipeline, it would necessitate substantial divestitures.

Bristol Myers has been pursuing smaller acquisitions to secure new medications, as it confronts dwindling sales of older drugs, some of which are about to encounter generic competition.
