Greenwave Circularity Raises $31.5 Million for Plastic Recycling

Indian recycling and sustainable packaging firm Greenwave Circularity has secured $31.5 million (approximately Rs.300 crore) from OeEB, the Development Bank of Austria, with the funding supported by the European Union’s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) through its Transforming Global Value Chains initiative.
The sustained funding will be allocated to expand Greenwave’s new plastic recycling facilities in India, as the firm aims to satisfy the increasing demand from FMCG businesses for recycled packaging options.

The facility will handle post-consumer plastic waste, especially thrown-away PET bottles, and transform it into food-grade recycled PET (rPET) resin, flakes, pellets, and preforms suitable for FMCG companies to produce new packaging.
The organization also intends to enhance recycling capabilities for other frequently utilized plastics like HDPE and PP.
The funding arrives as businesses encounter growing demands to include recycled content in packaging and develop more circular supply chains. This presents recyclers with a chance to expand their role from merely collecting and processing scrap to producing higher-value materials that can be supplied directly to manufacturing.

Greenwave stated that the facility will employ European recycling techniques and is anticipated to aid in formalizing aspects of India's disjointed scrap-collection system by establishing more organized connections with waste collectors and scrap providers. The organization anticipates that this will enhance the value obtained throughout the scrap value chain while generating formal jobs.
“This long-term financing marks a significant milestone in our journey to scale circular economy solutions across industries".
"Partnering with OeEB builds credibility and strengthens our ability to accelerate innovation, expand our reach, and deliver measurable impact", says Devang Kumar, founder and CEO, Greenwave Circularity.
The firm is also exploring opportunities outside India in the medium term. It aims to assess expansion into chosen emerging markets where regulations for recycled content in plastic packaging are anticipated to be implemented or reinforced.

Kumar stated that the company’s primary focus is on developing its recycling platform in India, with plans for international expansion in markets that have comparable regulatory standards and a demand for recycled packaging materials.
