Swedish furniture company IKEA intends to grow its footprint in the Delhi-NCR area by opening up to six stores in the next few years, featuring a combination of city-format shops and large-format concept locations.

IKEA India has revealed the opening of its second city-format store in Delhi-NCR located at DLF Avenue, Saket, as a part of this strategy. Covering almost 30,000 sq ft, the outlet will serve customers in South and Central Delhi and surrounding regions. The store in the city format is scheduled to open on July 30.

IKEA India's Country Commercial Manager Adosh Sharma stated that the company recognizes considerable growth opportunities in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Faridabad.

Besides the new store in Saket, the retailer ran a city-format outlet at Pacific Mall in Tagore Garden. Plans for large-format stores are already in place for Noida and Gurugram, with potential for at least two more locations in the future, possibly in Faridabad.

IKEA launched its e-commerce platform in the Delhi-NCR market in 2025 and subsequently opened its inaugural city-format store at Pacific Mall, Tagore Garden, backed by a central distribution hub in Gurugram. The firm stated that customer feedback from its initial Delhi-NCR store is influencing its growth strategy in the area.

“We already have two now. Then we have already got two planned in Noida and Gurgaon. And then I am sure we can add another two,” Sharma says.

The Swedish retailer has modified its strategy in India to incorporate smaller city stores in addition to its conventional large-format locations. Full-format IKEA locations usually surpass 400,000 sq ft, while city-format stores vary from 15,000 sq ft to 80,000 sq ft based on the area.

Earlier this month, Patrik Antoni, CEO of IKEA India, stated that the company plans to have approximately 30 stores throughout India by 2030, including a combination of large-format and smaller urban stores.

The firm has revealed intentions to increase its investment in India to over Rs 21,000 crore by 2030, more than doubling the amount, and is enhancing its presence in northern India through e-commerce. IKEA presently caters to customers in various cities such as Agra, Prayagraj, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ludhiana, and Varanasi.

"Today, we do understand that there is a potential that exists with e-commerce and quick commerce. It is not just limited to grocery nowadays. It has expanded its reach to other categories too. We are researching and learning in that space very deeply and understanding how that model works for us. We don't want to get into a rush and just offer something," he says.

While expanding its network of delivery hubs and fulfillment centers, Sharma stated that IKEA is thoughtfully assessing opportunities and does not plan to hurry into the segment.

The company states that the new Saket store will provide customers with home furnishing planning services, delivery, assembly and installation assistance, in addition to food options at the IKEA Cafe.

IKEA stated that the growth is based on an increasing customer demographic in Delhi-NCR, which currently has over 3,00,000 IKEA Family members in the area.
