Manmohan Singh Honoured Posthumously for Economics

The deceased former Prime Minister and renowned economist Dr. Manmohan Singh has received a posthumous honor through the esteemed P V Narasimha Rao Memorial Award for Economics, acknowledging his groundbreaking contributions to India's economic transformation.

Additionally, for his role in establishing the groundwork for the nation's evolution into a contemporary, internationally connected economy.

The P V Narasimha Rao Memorial Foundation (PVNMF), headquartered in Hyderabad, which established this recognition to celebrate outstanding achievements in economics, revealed that the award was bestowed during a ceremonial event conducted in New Delhi the previous week. Dr. Singh's spouse, Gursharan Kaur, accepted the recognition on his behalf and was met with enthusiastic appreciation from the assembled officials and attendees.

Montek Singh Ahluwalia, who previously served as Deputy Chairman of the former Planning Commission and worked closely with Dr. Singh throughout the pivotal period of India's economic liberalization in the early 1990s, presented the award. Ahluwalia, who was instrumental in policy development working alongside Dr. Singh, praised the departed leader's forward-thinking methodology, characterizing him as the mastermind behind reforms that enabled India to overcome its balance-of-payments difficulties and develop into one of the globe's most rapidly expanding economies.

PVNMF President K. Ramchandra Murthy and General Secretary Madhamchetty Anil Kumar attended the ceremony, which gathered scholars, policy experts, and supporters of both P V Narasimha Rao and Dr. Manmohan Singh.

The Foundation emphasized that this recognition represents both Dr. Singh's remarkable intellectual contributions and the ongoing reform-minded philosophy that both Rao and Singh promoted throughout their significant collaboration in leadership.

 

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who held the office of Prime Minister between 2004 and 2014 and previously worked as Finance Minister during P V Narasimha Rao's administration, is broadly recognized for liberalizing India's economic system through policy changes that eliminated the restrictive licensing system, encouraged market freedom, and set India on a fresh path toward economic expansion.
