Meta Appoints Microsoft's Mahoney as Chief Legal Officer
Meta Platforms has selected C.J. Mahoney, an experienced legal professional with a background in the technology industry and US government, as its new chief legal officer.
Mahoney served as Microsoft's senior legal executive and deputy U.S. trade representative during President Donald Trump's initial term, as stated on his LinkedIn profile.
The company announced that Mahoney will begin his new position on Wednesday, reporting directly to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
"C.J. offers exceptional legal knowledge, enthusiasm for emerging technology, and profound understanding of the global regulatory hurdles impacting our sector," Zuckerberg stated in a release.
Jennifer Newstead, Meta's ex-chief legal officer, declared late last year her departure from the social media firm to take on the role of general counsel at Apple in March.

Newstead has formerly acted as the legal counsel for the US Department of State. Beneath her leadership, Meta overcame a US effort to reverse its purchases of Instagram and WhatsApp in November of the previous year.
The appointment arrives during a period when Meta encounters criticism from advocacy groups and legal actions claiming the company did not safeguard young users from harmful content or deceived them regarding the psychological damage from its platforms.

The company declared a set of actions last year to ensure its social media platforms are secure for young users.
Meta Platforms, Inc is a U.S.-based global technology firm located in Menlo Park, California. Meta manages and runs various major social media platforms and communication tools, such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads.
The firm runs an advertising network for both its own websites and those of external parties; in 2023, advertising represented 97.8 percent of its overall income. Meta has been characterized as a major technology firm.
