Piyush Goyal Urges Exporters to Utilize Free Trade Agreements

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal encouraged exporters to fully utilize the various Free Trade Agreements established with developed nations to enhance the export of both goods and services.

"Industry must now intensify its efforts to penetrate new markets, upgrade quality and become more competitive to take maximum advantage of trade agreements," he says.

He convened a meeting with delegates from 35 export promotion councils and industry associations.

Goyal mentioned that the government has entered into Free Trade Agreements with advanced nations to assist various sectors in India such as farmers, workers, professionals, artisans, and MSMEs in tapping into the global market by providing them with preferential access.

He emphasized that these trade agreements will not only provide global opportunities for India's traditional medicines and yoga but also ensure the safeguarding of the interests of the country's agriculture and dairy industries.

Exporters have conveyed that the provisional trade agreement is anticipated to reinstate favorable market entry opportunities for Indian exports. The industry highlighted that the US ranks as one of India's major markets for exports, and the reduction in tariffs is expected to bring about increased stability and competitiveness for Indian exporters.

Organizations representing industries previously affected by the tariff measures imposed by the US, such as gems & jewelry, textiles and clothing, carpets, leather and footwear, marine products, handicrafts, engineering goods, and chemicals, emphasized that the reversal of tariffs has renewed confidence in the business sector and protected jobs in labor-intensive industries.

During the meeting, the ministry presented the recently completed trade discussions with the US, highlighting opportunities for market access, regulatory compliance structures, and strategies for expanding exports.

 

Authorities provided information on the recent trade discussions with the US, emphasizing opportunities for market access, compliance standards, and methods for expanding exports. Representatives from the industry expressed appreciation for the clarity provided and reiterated their dedication to increasing exports in key sectors.

Discussions also touched upon the advancements made in the Export Promotion Mission (EPM), a key government initiative aimed at bolstering the export environment. The industry expressed appreciation for various measures implemented to facilitate trade, including improved access to trade finance through interest rate subsidies, collateral guarantees for export credit to MSMEs, and specific assistance for market entry.

It is anticipated that further initiatives pertaining to trade finance, logistics, regulatory compliance, branding, and diversification of markets will be introduced gradually. Goyal restated the government's dedication to enhancing the expansion of exports, fostering deeper global connections, and solidifying India's position as a reliable global supply partner through the implementation of new trade pacts.
