PM Modi Chairs Roundtable With Global Semiconductor CEOs

Before Semicon India 2026, occurring from Thursday to Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a Roundtable with global CEOs of semiconductor firms and encouraged them to engage in the next stage of India's semiconductor development.

Heads and representatives from various organizations attended the meeting, including SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron Ltd, Fujifilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semiconductor Devices, and IBM Research, among others.

In the meeting, the PM highlighted the significance of strong cooperation between the government and the semiconductor sector in influencing India’s technological future. He emphasized India's robust base of talent, technology utilization, and infrastructure, urging for increased involvement from industry in areas like skill development, innovation, and emerging technologies such as AI and Quantum Computing.

Mentioning the goal of training one crore individuals in AI, he stated that India's talent base, along with the expertise and skills of international industry leaders, can generate substantial opportunities.

Modi stated that India must aim to be one of the frontrunners in emerging technologies, highlighting the substantial advancements in the semiconductor industry and mentioning that the ecosystem is transitioning from basic initiatives to a stage of increased scale and potential.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government's dedication to a consistent and adaptive policy framework, stressing that policies should change alongside technological progress and industry needs.

 

He called upon industry leaders to provide recommendations on policy and administrative actions. He promised them that the government would take their feedback into account while aiming to enhance the sector further.

"Pursuing all initiatives to establish India as a frontrunner in innovative technologies," he stated in a message on X.

The CEOs acknowledged the government's ongoing initiatives to enhance India's semiconductor capabilities, highlighting advancements in manufacturing, design, infrastructure, and talent cultivation. They conveyed optimism regarding the prospects arising from India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 (ISM 2.0) and in India’s ability to develop competencies throughout the semiconductor value chain, which encompasses manufacturing, research and development, advanced technologies, and allied sectors.

Acknowledging the PM’s guidance and assistance, they noted that the advancements made in recent years have established a solid basis for increased industry involvement. They conveyed their dedication to aiding India's rise as a competitive global semiconductor and technology center.

In the meantime, Japanese technology firm Fujifilm revealed plans to invest Rs.800 crore in a new greenfield semiconductor materials production plant in India. The announcement followed the attendance of its CEO at the Prime Minister’s Roundtable.

In accordance with the Indian government's vision under ISM 2.0, the initiative will implement a two-phase, phased investment approach in line with industry expansion and client needs. Phase 1 is set to commence construction in the financial year 2026, with commercial output from the new manufacturing site expected in fiscal year 2028, according to the company.
